Lots of Kids spaces lately!!

I have tons of projects in the works for clients this spring and thought I would give a brief update!

It seems like I have been designing lots of kids spaces lately.

My main client base is young families and parents seem to concentrate on the kids rooms before their own….I am guilty of this as well!

I do love a kids space and the creative doors it opens.

OB-Lincoln Park Kids Bath

The Mood Board above is a bathroom I am working on for an E-Client.

My client has great taste and an eye for style but has been a little stuck on this space. I have to say I cant blame her….there is not a ton out there in the way of shower curtains for boys that are not super cheesy…..where is all the cute decor for kids?

I can only design so many PB Kids bathrooms before I am bored. Maybe I need to come up with a new line of Trendy Kids Home Decor? Hmmm? Food for thought….stay tuned 😉

An Entire Floor for Little Boys!!!

Today I worked on the preliminary design for the second floor of an upcoming project.

I can not tell you how excited I am to be part of this remodel!

This home is part of Kalamazoo’s history….and its the cutest 1920’s colonial ever!!

In the best shape too!

The previous owner took great care of this house and now we are going to tweak it a bit for my clients before they move in.Unfortunately, it has to be rewired first due to knob and tube wiring. It’s a total budget killer….and I am not looking forward to the weeks of plaster work that will follow before we can get inside to start the design transformation.

The entire second floor of this colonial belongs to two little boys….are they lucky or what?

Here is what we have in store for them!

First Up….The Play-space they share at the top of the stairs. This is the perfect little space to hang out and play video games or watch TV.I even had a request for a mini-fridge from a four year old!! Too Funny!

OB-Upstairs Playroom

There is a room off to the left of the playroom that is the ultimate boys room. The previous homeowner sold us his two antique brass twin beds from Europe, which are so fabulous!! The room has a built in desk area and small sitting porch, which will make a great place to play toys. We went with a fun “Bug Theme” that can be easily changed as this oldest sibling grows up.

OB-Rex's Room

The other bedroom is a bit smaller for the youngest boy in the family. I think his bed is by far the coolest though….lets hope there is no sibling rivalry over the beds!!!

OB-Brady's Room

Kids spaces are the most fun part of my job for sure!

Stay tuned….next is the first floor and master bath!

Lake Cottage Study Reveal

About a year ago we remodeled our study.

This room is the old master bedroom and actually serves as a pass through to the family room and/or the new master bedroom now.

We spend tons of time in this room.

It  has high ceilings, skylights that fill it with light and the floor to ceiling bookshelves that serve as great storage.

French doors open one side to the family room while another glass door leads to our master.

When we moved in it really lacked character.

It was painted a icky lavender color and needed to be warmed up for sure.

The old office furniture from our previous home did not work in the space so we sold it before we moved.

We lived in the space a bit to decide what configuration would work for our needs.

Don’t you love the old file cabinet and folding table look with cardboard accessories?

Very Stylish!

First I shopped for furniture.

I settled on the Pottery Barn Bedford corner desk with file cabinet and small desk to form our custom unit.

The reason I chose this was because I could configure the desk specifically for our needs.

We have had it now almost three years….do I love it? It does serve its purpose very nicely but I am a bit disappointed on how it has held up. We are not very hard on furniture and this desk set shows every ding and scratch, which is a bummer.

We received the desk and then time went on….other things took priority, like the kitchen remodel. For a good year the space looked like this….

But I had plans!

I wanted to  try Board and Batten on the walls and paint the room Navy.

This is a lake cottage and I want to keep it nautical without making it look cheesy.

I chose Starless Night by Behr as my wall color.

With such a dark color we knew we needed to add the Board and Batten to lighten up the room.

Unfortunately, the skylights do get covered with snow in the winter which,  can make the room a bit dark.

So, I researched all sorts of Board and Batten tutorials on the web but, stuck to Thrifty Decor Chick’s advice pretty consistently.

Thank you Thrifty Decor Chick! I absolutely love your blog!

We bought lots and lots of primed 1×4’s and started constructing a pattern on the wall. The room seemed to come alive with character immediately.

Then I tackled the huge task of caulking and repainting the built in shelves.

I could not be happier with the finished product! It’s Nautical with the navy walls and orange accents but could really fit into any space.

Study 4

The sisal rug is fluffy enough for us to sit on and play a game. My collection on vintage globes fit in just fine.

My daughters favorite place to read a book is in the leather chair.

My husband can be working at the main computer while I work on client projects along side him.

This home office is the busiest room in our house these days and we love to be in it!
