A few weeks ago I started work with a new client. She came to me after she had hired a local furniture store to help her with design in this large new construction home. Here is a lesson for everyone out there….the designers at furniture stores are great but, they are also in the business of selling furniture. When they offer “Free Interior Design Services”, it is really not free. Isn’t that the first thing we all learned in Econ 101? There is NO free lunch! I can hear my crazy scatterbrained Econ professor saying it now, LOL! The design services are included in the commission they make off the furniture they sell you. So, if you are looking for a specific piece of furniture or are in need of a sofa, then a furniture store if the place to go. They are a great design resources for sure but, if you are looking for someone to tie a complete room together then you need a designer who has limitless resources available to them.
This particular furniture store really helped her choose some great pieces but when it came to accessorizing the home that is where the design stopped….most furniture stores has very few accessories so a designer who can shop outside of the store is really needed. In my opinion, accessories are really the most important part of the home! I can’t wait to post the after pics of this house. Those sofas are screaming for throw pillows and lamps flanking the artwork. The bookshelves need books to add character to the space and to be properly styled.
We also have decided to paint the wall the TV is on Benjamin Moore Squirrel Tail to make the fireplace tile pop!
The lighting is also an issue. These photos say it all and the homeowner is chomping at the bit to get it all replaced. We are ordering it all now so look for updates!
So, off I go, room by room to add character and life to this family home.
